Featured Custom: Gorilla Grodd
This most excellent Gorilla Grodd custom was contributed by our friend Wes at Scary-Crayon.com. It’s an exciting custom for two reasons - One, it marks the first submitted custom to be featured on SuperArticulated (ie - not made by me!); and two (and more importantly), it’s a really freakin’ great representation of one of DC’s most inventive and diabolical villains. See pics and Wes’ write-up of the big telepathic ape when you expand the post.
“I really, really like Gorilla Grodd. Not only is he an evil genius with mind control abilities, the raw strength necessary to hurl cars through buildings, and (depending upon who’s writing) an insatiable hunger for human flesh, but he’s a talking gorilla to boot. So given my dislike of the recent DC Direct Gorilla Grodd and unfortunate lack of interest in most of the DC Universe Classics Wave 2 characters, I decided to add some Grodd love to my DC figure collection with my first custom repaint.
Taking my final inspiration from Ed McGuiness’s red-eyed, bloodthirsty Grodd as seen in JLA: Classified #1-3, I painted over a Gripping Kong figure from the Playmates King Kong line (these things are all over KB for $5 each) to make the resulting Gorilla Grodd. And figures are always more fun with accessories, so I outfitted him with a cape from my old Playmates 1988 TMNT Shredder figure. The staff and skull, respectively, come from the Playmates 2K3 TMNT Feudal Shredder and the Headless Horseman from the McFarlane Sleepy Hollow line.”

I have been using the same Kong toy as Grodd! Nice job…looks like it has more articulation than the series 2 BAF! Why is that by the way? The Metamorpho is great and the Grundy looks supremely awesome but the Grodd looks like it has less articulation than old Kenner figures. Am I wrong or what?
Thanks! And I don’t know — the BAF Grodd certainly looks less articulated than the standard figures, but he could still have a good amount. The hips look like mere swivels, but the images we’ve seen look like he could be hiding hinged knees and ball ankles, which would certainly be kinda neat. Also, I bet that the torso is made of some kind of rubber that allows Grodd to bend forward… thereby giving him the ability to “walk” on his knuckles. I actually think he’ll be great — just not great enough to warrant buying an entire wave of figures that I don’t want.
So the Gripping Kong figure probably has more articulation, but I’m betting it’s less useful than that of BAF Grodd. Actually, given that I’m still more/less working on the custom due to the weird waist joint — and the fact that standing him can be awkward because of the shape of the feet and the angle of the ankle swivels — I’d probably recommend one of the other Kongs for novice customizers like myself. Assuming KB still has them the next time I make it out to a mall, I plan to pick up one of the others (the one vs those pink flying thingies looks pretty decent) for a potential Monsieur Mallah repaint.
