DCUC… Lightray?!

dcuclightray3.jpgWow. I didn’t see this one coming. Action Figure Insider has scooped the latest release from Mattel for inclusion in the DCUC line and it’s… Lightray!? Bah?! I know very little about this character, other than that he belongs to the “New Gods” pantheon. Guess I’m gonna have to do some Google research! There’s no word yet as to when or where we’ll see him. I’m guessing this is just a teaser for NYCC which is this weekend. I’m all atwitter with anticipation!

  1. Whoa… LIGHTRAY! Like you, I know very little about him, but I’m always up for an excuse to delve deeper into the Fourth World mythos. If Lightray is in DCUC Wave 4, it’s entirely possible that Mattel will put out two series in a row that I’m actually interested in grabbing in their entirety. Keep it up with the great character choices, Mattel!

  2. I wouldn’t call myself a Lightray fan, but this is certaintly an interesting choice. The figure looks well made and as long as the BAF is a good character choice and made well, I’ll be picking this up.

  3. Yeah. I really like that Mattel is comfortable with plugging in really obscure characters this early in the line. They seem to have total confidence in DCUC and no desire to run it into the ground with random repaints like they’re prone to do with their “flagship” lines. Hopefully they can step it up on product quantities and distribution and maybe try to get Wal-Mart on board again. That alone would help distribution tremendously. Until then it’ll be online preorders for me!

  4. I agree 100 % more obscure characters will keep the line fresh for many reasons including the fact that we will have to wait for the bigger names like Flash. Although I really want my big 7 complete (Supes, Bats, Aquaman we have; Manhunter, Wonder Woman we know we’ll get, Green Lantern We’ll have soon; Flash) I like getting the small balls too and getting the big guys first might kill some of the excitement.
I want more from Apacolypse…I want Calibak…Caliban?..(Caliban is Shakespeare) OK Calibak. I want Steppenwolf. Desad..eh.
Many characters I want the most are less popular guys like The Question , or Lobo…I dunno if people consider him less popular now. In the 90’s he was reaping the benefits of Wolverine’s popularity I think; but now. Any way I want him. Simon Beasley rules.
The two I want the most now that I know there will be a Wonder Woman…
    Martian Manhunter and Captain Marvel!
Man I am so pleased with DCU right now I am giddy and gossiping like a school girl.

  5. Agreed, this line is awesome, and I like that there are some lesser known characters (I know very little about Orion and even less about Lightray, but now I want a complete set of New Gods, even if I can only name 4 of them) along with the bigger name characters.
This is the first line where I am actually buying complete waves - 2 and 3 I’m definitely getting all of, and chances are I’ll end up being a completionist for the first time in my life (although Penguin and Classic Bats still do nothing for me).

I second the request for Martian Manhunter, Flash and Captain Marvel (Jonn in 4 with WW and Flash and Reverse Flash in 5?). Also Hawkgirl.

  6. i too was wondering when obvious characters like martian manhunter will make their debut. what gives? its not like its a hard retooling of already modular body types.

  7. Love the choice of Lightray! The “C” characters are always great and make the anticipation of the “A” characters that much more exciting. On a side note, I really need me a Captain Marvel and a Cap Marvel Jr.!!!

  8. isnt he dead???

  9. Cool figure! I’m really looking forward to him as well!

  10. Hopefully he’ll come with energy attachments like Electric Superman!

  11. James: I think almost all of the New Gods are dead at this point, though I fully expect them to be revived by some multiverse-breaking punch or whatever. Barda and Orion are much too awesome to leave among the deceased.

Lightray was arguably killed in the DCAU as well, though a blast from Evil Star probably wouldn’t prove fatal to a New God.
