Iron Man Movie Discussion!
Just because this a toy site doesn’t mean we can’t still talk about other things from time and time and Iron Man the movie is something I can imagine us having quite a bit to say about. It officially opens today, and with this film’s cast and it’s uber-awesome director, I can’t see it being anything short of spectacular. So, let the discussion begin!

So, I haven’t seen it yet. But I plan to try to hit it up either tonight or tomorrow.
I will be seeing it tomorrow afternoon, after which I will return to this thread!
Here’s the video review from Richard Roeper and his guest critic Michael Philips. The fact that it even got pre-screened for critics (unlike last year’s Marvel movie Ghost Rider which didn’t because its producers knew it would get panned) bodes well and must mean that its at least half decent…

I think Batman and Hellboy are my must-see movies. I was there on opening night 2 years ago for the first Batman Begins and was shocked at how under-attended it was for its opening night. Glad it generated legs as the glowing reviews and positive word of mouth spread. Marvel movies generally fall into the “I’ll just Netflix it when it comes out” category. Unless my fellow SA Forum buddies advise differently.
I’m kind of a film snob and generally hate superhero movies because they never “get it right” in my mind in terms of faithfulness to the comics. But i have faith in favreau. he seems like a genuine fanboy. i mean, i don’t think michael bay had ever seen a single episode of the original transformers toon, and i’m pretty sure tim burton had never read a single batman comic in his life when he made his bats films. and both of those franchise seem to be general regarded as “good” by the average viewing public. but to me, the history of comic book to movie adapations has been a bleak one. but that seems to be turning around a bit.
batman begins was outstanding. i saw it in theatres three or four times (its one of only two movies i’ve ever seen in theatres more than once). so i have really high expectations for the dark knight.
Iron Man is a little different. I don’t really have any expectations, but I’m very curious. It’s the first film produced and distributed directly by Marvel, and I think that is a brilliant strategy on their part. “If the studios can’t do our characters justice then we’ll just make the movies ourselves!” Genius!
Easily better than DD, GR, and FF. But DK will own this summer.
I dunno, I think Bay saw some eps of the original Transformers ‘toon before he made his movie — I just don’t think he cared! But don’t get me started on that odious film…
As far as Iron Man goes, I’m not sure what to expect either. I’m not terribly optimistic about it — in large part because the setting of the film (or at least part of it) during the current Middle Eastern conflict really bothers me. I watch superhero movies and whatnot partly to escape reality, not to be reminded of and bogged down by it! And I’m not sure I have much faith in Marvel’s production/distribution either. I think they had quite a bit to do with the animated The Invincible Iron Man and it was one of the worst cartoon superhero flicks I’ve ever seen.
Definitely looking forward to The Dark Knight, though… although I have a feeling it’s not going to live up to expectations. Time will tell.
Go see it. It’s quite entertaining. RDjr IS Tony Stark. The director is a fan and it shows. Best Superhero movie since Batman Begins.
Stay until the credits end. Someone will pop up and say hello.
Im alike SAG, never liked a movie completly, and fell dissapointed when is over. but this movie is awesome, i mean it, i was with a huge smile waiting for the dvd to watch it 330 times more. all the easter egs, for fans, the caracterization, the final cameo, damn..they actually keep the armor desing as loyal as possible. Robert Downey Jr. is perfect as Tony Stark dudes… is so friggin enterteined. but i have to advise…there are some free variations from comics, that doesnt annoing me too much, but may be some one could think different. But overall, is, for me, the best superheroes movies so far along batman begins (being myself a marvel fan, is more of my likeness). so guys, go and watch it… and SAG i know how you fell with this kind of movies, because i share that sense, but i asure you, you wont regret from this movie.
I saw it thursday nite and geez THE BEST SUPERHERO MOVIE EVER! The action sequences are perfect. Looks EXACTLY like in the comics. Every punch, blast….straight out of the comic without looking corny! I’m choosing this as my TOP superhero movie over Batman because batman’s story …as good as it was…wasn’t true to the comics (Batman Begins).
Ironman is pretty faithful to the comics..THE most faithful to the comics actually. The only difference is well…that would be telling but it’s pretty minor.
and yes…STAY STAY STAY after the credits….another “character” appears and you will be AMAZED!
I can’t wait to see this movie tonight!
To keep myself busy before the movie, I went out and bought myself Batman and Joker movie masters figures and The Hulk and Abomination figures. I have got to say that they are all 4 really good figures, but the Batman ones are amazing! I recommend you pick them up the minute you find one in stores! Be careful though, my Joker’s right hand was stiff so I gave it a little twist and the hand moved, but not the peg. Now I’m afraid to touch it. Same thing with Batman’s leg, so just a word of warning to anyone who hasn’t picked them up yet.
This movie is spectacular and the scene after the credits makes you just want to cry with joy. Make mine Marvel Studios!
Everyone I know who has seen it is raving about how awesome it is. I’m trying to scrounge together a group to go see it tonight.
That movie…
WOW! It was such a great movie! There wasn’t a dull moment throughout the whole film and even after the credits it continued to amaze me! SAG, I hope you see it soon because it is THE best superhero movie ever!
I personally love the original Burton Batman. Face it guys, every adaptation of a comic or cartoon varies from the source material in some way, and comic writers update origins and explore different takes on characters and storylines all the time. There are things in both Batman ‘89 and Batman Begins that are ans aren’t faithful to the comics. For me the key is getting the characters right. As long as you do that and don’t go too haywire with changing things, they usually come out okay.
Having said all that, Iron Man is awesome. Downey is indeed perfect, but so is the entire cast. The world feels real. The dialouge constantly references the characters past experiences, and you feel as if they know each other. Friends are really FRIENDS. I love that A list actors such as Tereence Howard and Gwenyth Paltrow took smaller roles and still turn in great performances. As far as not liking the current middle east aspect, I don’t think it was too heavy to keep it from being fun. It actually made it better for me because Stark looses his naiveity about the complexities of the world and has to atone for the role he and his company have had. I think this is why its getting such good reviews, because it is a superhero movie that’s deeper than “Hey look, I just got powers!”
The first comic issue of IronMan had Tony Stark helping the army fight the “Reds” in Vietnam, getting captured, and building a suit of armor for his captors that protected his heart and helped him fight back. Commies and Reds are out. Afghanistan and terrorists are in.
okay, just saw it. yes, that was fantastic.
my favorite scene was when tony and rhodie were on the plane and rhodes was refusing to drink because they were working and then it immediately cuts to him wasted and talking about friendship while the stewardesses pole dance. it was the perfect “these guys are best friends and go way back” scene. i loved it.
Yeah SAG, turn into the iron-mantology….
i loved this movie. it is very comic accuate. i was impressed with the whole movie from the actors, timing, special effects, everything. i just didn’t like the black nick fury. this is the regular universe, and now mixing the ultimate fury? that doesn’t jive with me.
mmmm….who said it was the regular universe? is an adaptation of both, in regular universe jarvis is not a robot (he is not even in ultimate), mandarin is not a taliban, and iron man met james rhodes after escape from cautivitie, in regular it was a long time before he said he was iron-man.
all the marvel movies are adaptations that take some elements from both universe, in the x-men movie, the original team wasnt iceman, jean, cyclops, beast and angel; in spiderman eddie brock was skinny and gwen stacy alive, in rise of silver surfer galactus was a big purple smoke or fart or whatever he was…. for just put a couple of examples.
dear uncle SAG
i went to see ironman the movie
have you went to see it
love grayson
see ya soon
dear nephew grayson
Yes, I have seen the iron man movie.
I can’t help but notice that your parents let you watch a lot of violent action movies. Eh, I guess Iron Man didn’t really have any objectionable content. We should write a thank you note to Marvel Studios for producing films that are both entertaining to adults and appropriate for young viewers.
see ya soon indeed.
I half agree with Plain sliced. The movie seemed to have “characters” all from the regular universe. While the outside “stuff” such as Javis, the mtg of Rhodes…was a bit different but it’s not from a specific universe. I think what Plain sliced means is that character wise, everyone was from the same universe except Fury so he sticks out.
I think character wise they should’ve stuck with regular Universe. Since everything was comic accurate and all. Personally, I don’t like it when they change the character in any way. Like in Daredevil’s African American Kingpin. How would an asian, latin or white Blade look?
It’s the same deal with the Justice league toon. They wanted to add diversity so they chose the Stewart Green Lantern instead of Hal Jordan and added in a female hawkgirl instead of Aquaman. I’m all for diversity but for established comic characters, I don’t think that should change.
For example, the new Justice League Movie has a Latin Superman. Superman’s a midwestern boyscout farmboy….how does that work? The actor’s a good looking guy and all but playing Superman? In fact the whole cast is pretty crappy. Common, the rapper? as Green Lantern? He looks like he could play the part as Green Lantern but the fact that he’s a rapper makes it a bit off for me. I just can’t match John Stewart with a rapper. lol
Sigh…this will historically be the ONLY superhero movie I will not see.
I think it’s sad that there are only a handful of minority actors and a handful of minority superheroes that they have to change up ethnicities or reuse the same ethnic actor for another ethnic superhero…
The wanted Wesley Snipes to play Black Panther a while back. I was like…wasn’t he Blade? Very Sad.
Okay, I was trying not to comment on the whole Nick Fury thing (spoiler’s anybody?) but since everybody else has chimed in already, I might as well. I personally don’t have a problem with Sam Jackson as Nick Fury. I think it’s actually pretty cool because when Mark Miller and Steve Mikniven did The Ultimates they “cast” all of the characters and they cast Sam Jackson as Nick Fury. It even looks like him in the comics! So now we get into this whole debate about mixing the regular universe with the ultimate universe. Well they way I look at it, they have been mixed the entire time Marvel has been making films, the only reason people say anything now is because you can’t help but notice a character being a different ethnicity. Think about it though, in the X-Men movies, Wolverine doesn’t wear a mask, and all the X-Men have similarly styled, darker colored costumes, just like in Ultimate X-Men. In Spider-Man 2, Doc Ock bears a lot better resemblance to the Ultimate Doc Ock than the classic Doc Ock. In Iron Man, Tony Stark is held captive in Afghanistan, not Vietnam, Jarvis is a computer program, not an actual butler. This is why the movies should be looked at as their own universe, the Marvel Movie Universe. As I said in my previous post, as long as they get characterization and the major story elements correct, the movies work. The only reason I prefered (at first) the traditional version of NIck Fury was because of his current involvment in Marvel’s big event “Secret Invasion”, but since that has nothing to do with the movies they are making, it doesn’t really matter that they went with the Sam Jackson version.
As far as the Justice League cartoon goes, they didn’t create any characters that didn’t already exist in the comics, they just chose a more racially and sexually diverse lineup. Fact is that the Justice League has been a revolving door of members since its inception way back when. Sure Hal Jordan is the most recognized Green Lantern, but the Justice League cartoon was set in modern times, and when it was created, Hal Jordan was dead in the comics!
As far as the Justice League movie goes, well that thing is practically dead anyway. All of that casting stuff was just rumor anyway, none of it was confirmed so we don’t really have to worry about that.
Yeah the Justice league movie is gonna be dead cold for a long time… and i agree with fryman, you can said the movie are stick to the regular unvierse because is a whole fake. im the kind of person that always got disapointed after a film that is an adaptation from something i like (video games, cartoons, or comics) because i always hope very naive it stick to the original version, something we have to admit is hard to do in 2 hours. Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury?? sweet… spiderman 3: peter parker emo??? arg!!! wolverine a hollywood pretty face taller than storm???? blargh!!! venom a squirty kid??? pffft!! mephisto an old man an black hearth a green day wanna be??? spitting blood, and what about Dr Doom mc namara and troy?? kill me now…. why people complain so much about nick fury played for jackson that at least is a reference to the comics, when in other movies like those crappy x-men 1,2,3 or the panfully spiderman 3 or the bore Fantastic Four they just take a good s..t on the charactaers and comics references… and the whole thing of the justice league cartoon is really annoyng is like a contra-culture for a contra-culture of diversity…
Actually, I don’t really expect these movies to stick to the regular universe. I just thought that Ironman was probably the MOST comic and universe accurate superhero movie I’ve ever seen that I think they should’ve gone all the way and chose the original Fury.
Also, I’m not complaining…I give the movie a 10 but if I had to nit pick that would be the only comment I would say about the movie. I just had to comment because of the cast for Justice League. Even though it may not be the definite cast, I having a feeling that if that’s their preliminary cast, final casting will be crap.
I’m actually fine with the Sam Jackson “ultimate” nick fury. It’s like other’s have said, the movie universe is its own thing to me. It’s neither ultimate nor 616. So, I say let them pick and choose the best elements from each.
And I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that the Justice League movie has been officially canned. But, an Avengers movie is scheduled for 2011!
Went to see IronMan last night with the kids, great film ,My rating 5*
And that is a rarity with me cause usually when there is a lot of hype about a movie, I tend to get ready to be disappointed but Ironman was none of these!
Like, I was wondering if Robert Downey Jr can be a superhero and he sure was! His character was brilliant and he played it to perfection.
The suit was like wowww. You can’t help admiring (thanks to the help of virtual special effects) the creation of the robotics and that suit. Even the first prototype!
It has the right mix of action, chit-chat and humour to keep the film going at a smooth pace and to keep the viewer interested. Even the credits at the end of the film were cool! Oh yes and his house was like wow!
Its confirmed that the sequel is out in 2010
