The Incredible Hulk Movie Discussion

the incredible hulk movieWell, it’s been another slow week for toy news and The Incredible Hulk opens today so I figured I’ll put up a place for us to talk about it. I’m pretty psyched, probably even moreso than I was for Iron Man. I’ve never been a big fan of the Hulk as a character/hero, but I dig Ed Norton and from what I’ve read he learned from the mistakes of the disastrous Ang Lee Hulk movie and just made this a two hour action fest of unmitigated violence and carnage! Anyone seen it yet? Hulk Smash! w00t!

  1. I’ve seen it. It was awesome!! Definitely better than the Ang Lee movie. Hulk was great and Ed Norton was great as Bruce Banner. One of the best superhero movies I’ve seen..

  2. Just came back from the movies really good finally some justice to THe HUlk. And its great to not see Hulk fighting Pit bulls. Ed Norton Kicks ass

  3. I just got back from seeing it. I liked it a lot. I think I liked it better than Iron Man. It had a really nice “depth” to it without being boring or too emo. I’m really impressed with marvel’s moviemaking these days.

    Spoilerish thoughts:

I so thought “Mr. Blue” was going to be Reed Richards. Dunno why, it just made sense to me. Then when it was sterns and he got the blood dropped on his head I was like, “Oooh, The Leader is gonna be in the next one. Hot!”

Tim Roth was great. You could tell he was having a good time with the character. That scene between him and Hulk in the campus courtyard had me jonesing for a Capn A movie. I could see how the “super soldier” fight moves would look on screen and it was pretty hot.

The random thunderstom that rolled up at the end of that scene and the lightning bolt that struck Hulk… was that supposed to allude to Thor? It seemed kind of “out of nowhere” and I know Thor is slated for a marvel movie soon, so maybe they were trying to imply that he’s already “in the universe”.

I liked Norton’s performance. He did a good job of bringing that subdued expression of a man constantly battling to control his inner demons. The movie felt very “thick” to me. It wasn’t just some thin superficial action run.

    Good stuff!

  4. I like it. However, I agree with a lot of ppl who say it’s not on par with Ironman. Ironman was waaaaaaay better in my opinion.

Then again, a lot of ppl disagree with me because I think Ironman is THE BEST superhero movie….even more so than Batman Begins.

Ironman stayed true …at least the most FAITHFUL i’ve seen to the comics.
There were changes in the hulks orgin..which i would let go, but a lot of ppl have commented about his “power levels”. What happened to ” The Angrier Hulk gets, the Stronger Hulk gets”? I thought Hulk was pretty weak “power level” wise.

Other than his strength level, I thought the movie was a A-. The highlight was the end bar scene dialogue!

  5. Should i stay at the end of the credits???

  6. @Mr.Cooltoy- No you don’t have to

  7. Yup, I wouldn’t wait till the end of the credits.

I notice a LOT of ppl who went to Hulk sneaked straight into The Happening.

This might be off topic but man, The Happening…ain’t happening and it was probably one of the worst movies I’ve seen….pretty bad acting from Mark Wahlberg…….yeeeesh.

Y’know I agree with SAG on the substance of the Hulk….the movie did seem “thick”….I like the take they had on Banner trying to control his anger.
I didn’t liike Liv Tyler though…horrible actress. And the Lightning scene…I had the same thought….I was like damn that would be cool if they foreshadowed Thor!

  8. ok im sorry but i thought it was better than iron man-i didnt think it was possible-but i think it was.the action scenes were some of the best iv seen in a long time and tim roth was outstanding.absolutely superb and i hope it does well at the box office

  9. My brother was like…”Is that Doc Samson?” and I couldn’t figure out why Doc Samson would be calling himself Mr. Blue; then when I saw the name I vaguely remembered Sterns but the actor looked a bit like Leader so when the ooze started leaking into his head I turned to my bro and said…”NOW you know who he is?” we laughed…

Better than Iron Man…well, there was more Hulk on screen than Iron Man…that is accurate yes? well it felt like more if that is not true.

The whole movie seemed a bit too much like an homage to the Bill Bixby show. Not just the atmosphere either but from the music to the clips from “Courtship of Eddy’s father” to Norton wearing Denim most of the time.
I do not mean Lou Ferigno’s cameo…we all expected that yes? although they gave him a big speaking part, including I am told the voice of Hulk ( is that true?, I was told after seeing the movie.)
I think ya’ might be reaching with the Thor thing but I did think that more reference should have been made to Cap’. I was told he might make a cameo also but they should have mentioned him at least when they spoke of the super soldier serum.
I think maybe that not enough people stayed after the credits for Iron Man to see Fury and Stark talk about Avengers so they moved the tag with Stark and Ross on The Hulk to be sure people would see it. From everything I have heard or eread the idea is to make the Avengers in 2011 or after the Thor and Captain America movies come out and using all of the same actors.

Finally; I liked the And lee film…sorry but I did; I did like this one better and it may have been more fun than Iron man though I did feel Iron Man may be a bit better in the storyline area. They are both fun and I am glad that they are not Jane and Travolta in The Punisher!

  10. andrew, your right-iron man is a fantastic movie-its the same quality as the first spiderman movie and is a very strong entry into the list of best marvel films but for me,the hulk JUST beats it-

oh can i also add there are also more genuine laughs in iron man and hulk than there are in “comedy” superhero movie :D

  11. SAG…i had almost the same exact thoughts!!!! (ie mr Blue…cap America…etc…) this movie was awesome and i loved it. I had a big grin on my face pretty much the whole movie. I loved it. If they keep making Marvel Movies this good…i will just die…of awesomeness.

Did anyone else notice that the Super Soldier Serum was in a Cooler marked “Weapons Plus”????? That was cool.

I loved Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk ALOT. Marvel has really been hitting the mark on movies lately…

  12. I thought the movie was great and I really feel that it is on par with Iron Man, which I really really liked. Sure they changed the origin from the comics, but the whole “nuclear testing site” doesn’t really apply to 2008. I like the design of the hulk, particularly the face, better than the version in the Ang Lee film. The action scenes were great, and well directed. When Hulk faces off against Super Soldier Blonsky, I love the way the fight is filmed. I thought all the principle actors did well, even Liv Tyler. She isn’t the best actress by any stretch but I didn’t think she was bad in this. I like how they played it as if it took a lot out of him to transform into the Hulk, and he had to rest afterwards. I also liked how he had flashbacks and nightmares about the violence the Hulk took part in. That went a long way for character depth. I’m also really pleased that Hulk actually had someone he could fight. This is something that Warner Bro’s can’t seem to understand in regards to their Superman movies.

SAG - Are you talking about the scene where it is raining and Hulk and Betty are in a cave? The lightning doesn’t strike Hulk, it just strikes near him and when it thunders, the primal rage side of the hulk reacts as if some other beast is screaming at him. This scene is taken almost directly from the Marvel Mini-Series “Hulk: Gray” by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, the only difference is that the mini-series chronnicles Banner’s first transformation into the Hulk.

Things I noticed: In the opening montage, you clearly see Stark Industries, SHIELD, and Nick Fury mentioned. Betty’s psychiatrist boyfriend is Doc Samson who eventually becomes a freind of Banner’s and tries to help him. Notice how he took Hulk’s side when he was talking to General Ross? The whole Leader thing of course, Banner goes by the name David, just like in the old TV show.

Apparently Banner now knows how to control the Hulk, and can transform at will. That combined with Tony Stark showing up to speak to Genral Ross and BAM! Avengers Assemble!

  13. Fryman86–I didna’ catch that about Doc Samson… Did they really call the boyfrend Samson? Man!

Also…you are right on about the “Gray” scene. I didna’ think about that either but it’s true.

Also I agree witht he control over the transformation thing and wonder if they’re gonna go the whole “Smart Hulk” route next time.

  14. Yeah, the credits say it is Doc Samson. Funny thing is, remember that clip at the beginning of the first trailer where Banner is talking to him and Samson says “I’ve heard them all” and Bruce says “This is a bit more complicated”? Was it just me or was this scene absent from the movie?

  15. YEAH! Now I do! Cause He says something like, ” I lose control when i get angry,” and Doc is all, “can’t you just get some therapy for that…”
They do that all of the time though. They release trailers before the final cut of the film is done and as a result I see a lot on commercials that get me real excited and then come to find that the exciting stuff has been removed.
Anyway, that is awesome I will have to tell my brother who wanted Doc Samson to be a player in the plot. Thanks Fryman86

  16. apparently quite a bit was cut from the film to get it down to a shorter run time and have it be more ‘action’ focused. the director said that there will be 70 minutes of additional footage on the bluray disc. so, i’d imagine a lot of those samson scenes will show up there.

  17. yea I’m assuming the same thing, that one of the sub plots was Samson helping Betty help Banner (LOL) and most of it got cut. I’m interested to know how long Nortons cut was. I don’t think all 70 minutes was intended for the film cause that would make it a 2 hr 70 min movie LOL.

  18. ha. probably not. but i’m one of those weirdos who would probably actually really enjoy an epic three hour long hulk movie.

  19. Oh don’t get me wrong, as long as it was all relevant and had enough action spread throughout to keep the pace from dragging, I’d be all about a 3 hr comic movie. Avengers anyone?

  20. I agree and I think it is high time that movie producers bend to the will of those of us that don’t have a short attention span. If they are goint to cut a book or story up into shreds when they make a movie; especially if they have already shot the scenes, they should at least integrate them back into the movies when they are released on DVD (not just blue ray) and not in a deleted scenes section but back into the movie like Peter Jackson did with LOTR. Of course I would love for them to just make 3+ hour films as the norm. Fat chance! I know but I can dream.

  21. i really liked the movie. Despite some people’s reservations about the Hulk’s power levels, before the final battle with the Abomination, I recall Bruce Banner got injected with a serum that supposedly reacted with his physiology that enabled his transformation to back to human form. This might have reduced his angered state or even handicapped him in that final climactic battle with the Abomination. His anger never reached its peak, but the CGI effects were good but not as good as say ILM’s work in LOTR. But overall a great film indeed and worth a popcorn with it!

  22. there were actually several scenes cut out that were in the trailor and not in the movie.
doc samson’s part is really minimized and I’m ok with that because I did not care for the actor at all.
the scene in the trailor where blomsky flies backwards through the air after challengeing hulk with “is that all you’ve got”, was replaced by a more believeable shot.
and the scene from the trailor where banner is walking in the snow, almost looks like a glacier was cut completely. supposedly this is where banner was traveling to the north pole to commit suicide but marvel felt this was too dark. norton probably liked this and wanted it included. this was also the scene where cap was going to make a cameo frozen in ice. the director said this will be released on the internet soon.
I absolutely loved the movie and really hope they can get norton back for a sequel or at least the avengers. I can’t see anyone else in the part now that norton has put his stamp on the hulk.

  23. Ed Norton is fantastic as Bruce Banner! I was hoping he would saved himself for the role of Dr. Stephen Strange if that film would ever make it to the big screen ! Remember The illusionist ? He does resemble the Marvel character.
