Hellboy II Movie Discussion

hellboy II 2 the golden army movieThe new Hellboy II: The Golden Army movie opens today and I figured we’d need a place to talk about the presumed awesomeness of it. I know most of you guys are Marvel or DC nuts, but hopefully there’s a contingent of you who even if you’re not terribly familiar with the comics can appreciate what Perlman brings to the Hellboy character and how much fun Del Toro seems to be having directing this franchise. Hellboy FTW!

  1. I know I already talked about it in the other thread, but this movie is awesome! It’s different in the first so I wouldn’t say it’s better because I liked each one for different reasons. Johann was a great character and I liked how they portrayed him for the movie. I don’t wanna leave any spoilers here, but if you haven’t seen it yet go see it now!

  2. I suck. I just read the wikipedia of Hellboy 2 read the spoiler by accident. I’m a bit iffy about that though. Same issue I had with Superman Returns and that’s all I’ll say. lol

  3. Gah! I was going to go see it this morning buy my movie date can’t make it, so I’m gonna have to wait until tonight or tomorrow. the anticipation is dreadful. dreadful!

  4. wikipedia it! lol

  5. for me, it sucked. it was not mike mignola’s hellboy. it was more del toro’s hellboy. it felt like a sci-fi movie with a lowe budget and everybody is just either standing around or on a plotless journey somewhere with minimal background or depth.

at first, i thought i was watching men in black, with all the aliens in the MIB headquarters. even he ‘monsters’ loooked like aliens. then the troll market felt like i was watch the first star wars movie. i expected greedo to pop out any minute. that who scene in the troll market looking for the lone prince lead no where. it looked like a waste of production money.

in the movie trailer, it looked as if the prince had some massive fairie army; it was just him and the thug-wannabe wink? there was no depth there. all the way to the end, the ninja-fairie seemed out of place in a ‘monsters and ghouls’ themed movie franchise.

the whole movie seemed like filler for part three. the who preggers with twins smelled so much like the star wars prequels, even with the detah angel telling liz what’s coming up. or was the death angel reminding liz of HB1?

the whole abe love thing was so off. for me, david hyde pierce is the voice of abe, the way kevin conroy is the definetive voice of batman. abe looked and was better in part one. him and the FBI lead guy. jeffery tambor is a great actor, but here, he was reduced to being the butt of the jokes.

the standout character was krauss. great stuff. but one character can’t carry the film. roger had a cameo ‘again.’ you know he’ll be in part 3. bet on it. i just home del; toro stops recycling old characters from pan’s labyrinth. enough with the fairies already.

watching this dull movie, i thought, ‘i hope they make a toy out of …that one…and that one… and that one…” there are lots of potential toys like the definete army builder ‘golden army’ or the fairie guards or teenage hellboy or professor broom, for pete’s sake.

i was so disappointed in the nonsense of every acion movie that the main actors don’t get killed. biggest example, the tooth faires off everybody human, don’t bother with abe or liz or HB. it really felt like i was watching a made for movie sci-channel flick. thumbs down.

  6. ouch. pretty harsh review p_s. hmmm… i actually felt pretty much the same way about the first HB movie the first time i saw it but over time it grew on me and now i love it. hopefully i’ll feel the same way about this one.

  7. I agree with Plain-Sliced, it was not ‘Hellboy’ at all. Liz getting pregnant was like slaughtering the franchise IMO. Johann comedically dropping the F-bomb was pretty low humor. It seemed like it was just a bad sci-fi movie, and every moment they tried to make you laugh. I entered the theater really pumped, but left pretty dissapointed. It seemed like Del Toro just made a bad sci-fi movie that didn’t have anything to do with Hellboy, and just stuck the name on. Hopefully the third will be better, but if it includes the babies, I’m not expecting much.

  8. just saw it. i too agree with plain_sliced. it just really felt like del toro was just using this as a warm-up for the hobbit. hellboy, to me, is more sci fi than it is fantasy and this movie was all fantasy. kings and princes and goblins and trolls and elves? c’mon. if you’re gonna make a hellboy movie give it some zombies and ghosts and demons and mythical monsters. sigh…

the love story between abe and the princess had me cringing. and that single tear at the end? give me a break. so sappy, so cliche.

and wink didn’t last nearly long enough. oh well. at least we got some cool toys out of it!

  9. with hopefully more toys to come without suffering hasbro-type de-evolving joints. i really am disheartened that a good franchise is going down hill. remind me of the joel sheamuker ‘batman & robin’ movies. shrug.

the only redeeming point for me was finding a few of the new GG animated hellboy/ double DVD combos at my local best buy. it was a bargain. has anyone played that new hellboy video game? is it even out?

  10. i just picked up that best buy dvd w/ fig set yesterday as well. that really is a great value. two movies. two full comics. and a complete GG hellboy action figure for 20 bucks. couldn’t pass that up.

saw the ads for the game all over the place. but i only have a wii, so i guess i’m gonna miss out on that one.

  11. me too. all i got is wii. but the 3d shots look great. the animated movies are boring and long winded, and with the disaster of this would be sequel, the lame toyline, it doesn’t look good for the hellboy franchise. bet on it.

  12. yeah, it definitely seems like HB is on a downhill slide. But you never know. Maybe mezco will resurrect the comic line. those were some of the best figs ever.

you really thought the animated movies were boring? i liked them better than the live action flicks. they felt more like ‘true’ hellboy to me.

  13. The video game is actually pretty fun! The graphics look awesome and I love the way HB looks in the game. It’s sort of a blend between comic and movie version HB. The voice acting is awesome and HB seems more witty and a lot of quirky comments. I feel he is written a lot better in the game than he was for the movie. Oh! You know those Qee Hellboy keychains? Well, when I bought the game the guy handed me a small package and when I opened it I had clear plastic parts to assemble and now I have an awesome keychain to go on my key rings. Excellent little bonus when you buy the game, I’d like to say.

  14. the way the first hellboy movie played out, with john hurt narrarating it, and seeing the BPRD from a new guy (FBI guy meyers) eyes, it really felt like mignola’s comics. on the comics, mignola’s captions are in simple boxes, which feel like narration. same with the first movie. it played out like a storybook or comic panels.

personally i like the first hulk movie because of the comic panels used. different angles shown at the same time in comic form- to me, really felt like a comic book. i liked that. i guess looking at mignola’s awesome way of drawing and writting set the standard with the first movie, to me it makes the second movie and animated stuff looks boring.

in the animated series, everybody is so powerless and the only person really qualfied to tango with monsters is never really around. abe is useless in fights and is almost a liability if liz has to use her powers as demonsterated in sword of storms and in HB2.

things like that really make everybody but hellboy useless. without rogeror someone else superpowered in the mix, this whole franchise can really dwindle. i haven’t felt excited about hellboy until i saw the awesome 3d rendering for the video game. that’s sad.

  15. I can agree with you on some parts, but I still feel the movies are good if you look at them as being loosely based on Hellboy. They aren’t meant to be exactly like the comic books and I liked the fact that Del Torro put his own spin on things. I could have lived without the whole love interest between Hb and Liz and then Abe’s little flirty thing, but I liked how the characters turned out. If they made it too much like the comics it might have been a little boring and probably would not have drawn many non HB fans in.

  16. Hellboy 2 was fun; for sure that director has an amazing imagination, reminded me a lot of his work in Pan’s Labyrinth
