Marvel Toys, What Could Have Been…

Get ready to have your (toy collecting) heart ripped out. At SDCC this year, Marvel Toys held a panel where they showed off all the cool concept drawing and prototypes they had prepared for Marvel Legends and Legendary Comic Book Heroes that were never produced. Among the highlights are the Build-a-Vehicle Avengers Quinjet and the Grendel figures from LCBH. AFI has the pics of all that was shown. I weep to know that these figs will never see the light of day. Oh, what could have been… What could have been…

  1. i won’t shed a tear. its dumb of them to display what ‘could have been.’ they could have sketched out a billion characters, but if it aint hitting the production line to register to my shelf, its dumb to even show it. its like saying ‘if i married jessica alba, this would be our kids.’ ain’t gonna happen. all it does is anger the collector, not the competition. the competition just laughs at this and mocks ‘ha ha,’ to both collector and unemployed marvel toys/ toybiz employees.

the sadest part is that these sketches are better than any idea hasbro has because toybiz was ‘original thinking,’ instead of ’standing on the shoulders’ of great men’ like hasbro does.

  2. yep. well said.

  3. While I agree with some of what plain_sliced says, (it is a bit of a kick in the nuts to be teased like this) I’m still ballin’ my eyes out. I really loved the LCBHs line. I have every one and a couple of the variants. I was so excited for all the ones that were announced. I really wanted the Frost Giant and a Legends Darkhawk would have been sweet. : (

Does anyone know why they quit making figures? I’ve only heard that once they lost the Marvel license they figured it was kind of a waste of time to produce any toys. I don’t if that’s true or not, that’s only what I heard.

  4. Boy aint that a kick in the nads. Selling off to Hasblow was the worst thing Marvel could have done. I saw the new stuff at SDCC. Mattel has got them beat hands down with the DCU line. ‘original thinking,’ we will never get that from Hasbro.

  5. Painful. I don’t even know who Aphrodite is, but man that figure was gorgeous! I’d have bought two…

And wow, those Marvel mecha concept pics looked way better than the current TF Crossovers stuff Hasbro’s got out now. Granted, The TF Crossovers blow the old Marvel morphs stuff away, so it’s possible they wouldn’t have been able to deliver, but still… damn. And Darkhawk!!! Damn, damn, damn.

    Damn.

  6. Those pics were too painful to scroll through. I looked at a few and then bagged out. I’m venturing more into the world of porcelain busts and statues, rather then drop money on a load of crappy 6″ plastic (Hasbro MLs) or a few nice 6″ plastic ($20+S&H for DCUC exlusives or Mattel MOTU). Check out http://www.csmoorestudio.com and drool over that awesome Armor Bikini Witchblade statue for $180- a little more then that ML FinFangFoom series ;-)

  7. THE ROCKETEER? ARE YOU F’N KIDDING ME? That would have been the only LCBH figure I bought. Man I would have really killed for that one haha.

  8. one positive thing to say about this is that all it does is inspire the customizer to make a favorite figure. sure, most are not ‘glorbes’ or ‘Cal’ or ‘Jin Saotome’ level customizers, but it pushes our imagination. i know i can attempt a rocketeer custom because others have done them. cheers to toybiz! thanks for the good times.

  9. Have I ever mentioned just how much I love Grendel and how one of my all time most wanted superarticulated figures is a Hunter Rose? I canna say anymore here I am too sad.

  10. I’d pretty much pay (a reasonable amount) for a 6 inch Rocketeer custom….

  11. Any chance we could kidnap the board members of Hasbro and force them to relinquish the Marvel license…? Seriously, don’t we all hate ourselves for any complaints we ever voiced back when Toy-Biz was making Legends?

  12. I saw new pics of Indie Spotlight series 1 and 2 and some news about series 3 including GRENDLE PRIME!!!!!!!! Now this means of course that Indie Spotlight figures will be cancelled but maybe Hunter Rose is in my future after all. Tick looks AWESOME by the way
Anybody know when we might actually get to buy series 1?

  13. the ultimate iron man is a Z.M.D.C. Trooper produced by DaJoint
